DARREN PORTELLI

Biography

A graduate of the National Screen Institute (Features 2007/08) and Trans Atlantic Partners (2014), Darren Portelli recently completed his third feature film as producer. THE COCKSURE LADS MOVIE (Murray Foster) premiered at the 2014 Whistler Film Festival and was the Opening Gala Film at the Canadian Film Fest (2015). The film will be released theatrically as part of the Canadian Indie Film Series by A71 Entertainment. IT WAS YOU CHARLIE premiered at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival and won a Special Jury Prize at the Barcelona International Film Festival. The lead actor, Michael D. Cohen, was nominated for an Actra Award (Outstanding Performance 2014) and the film was also nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Cinematography (Luc Montpellier). ALGONQUIN starring Mark Rendall, Nicholas Campbell and Sheila McCarthy, premiered at the Montreal International Film Festival and won a Grand Jury Prize at Houston Worldfest (2014).

Darren’s slate of future productions includes the dramatic comedy MY FOOLISH HEART (Emmanuel Shirinian), scheduled for production in fall 2015. Telefilm Canada, OMDC, and The Harold Greenberg Fund (Bell Media) have provided financial support, and the project was selected for the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival: All Access Development Program. Darren’s international co-production OLIVER’S FLIGHT (Valerie Buhagiar) has received support from the Harold Greenberg Fund (Bell Media), and Darren recently travelled to Berlin with the project upon his acceptance into Trans Atlantic Partners.

As for television credits, Darren recently line produced THE QUEST FOR GOLD (NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC) for Cineflix Productions. For two seasons (2008/09), Darren was the series co-producer for the multi Gemini Award-winning travel series DEPARTURES, which airs on networks including National Geographic Adventure, Netflix, City TV and OLN, in over 47 countries worldwide.

Darren’s projects have brought him to India, Morocco, Libya, Mongolia, Iceland, Zambia, Madagascar, Ecuador, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Greenland, and straight across Canada. Darren’s produced short films have screened at prestigious festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival, AFI Dallas, Venice, Barcelona, and LA Shorts, while winning a Canadian Golden Sheath, 2 Platinum Remis, a Golden Remi, and several “Best Film” Achievements.
